This programme is unique to the West Coast of the South Island. It provides an introduction to carving a variety of hard stones including jade. Students will gain knowledge of a variety of tools and techniques with a focus on developing art and design skills.
Graduates have gone on to careers in the jade carving industry, including production carving and self employment.

Entry Requirements
Successfully achieved NCEA Level Two English Standards (4 credits in reading and 4 credits in writing) or equivalent.
Sucessfully achieved 12 credits in NCEA Level Two Visual Art or submit a portfolio of artwork.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent)
Level 5.5.
Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme i.e., experience, current work. Please contact the Polytechnic

This programme is unique to the West Coast of the South Island. It provides an opportunity for further artistic and creative development in the specialised area of carving jade and hard stones. Wider research into stone carving cultures, both past and present, will take students further in the development of their own unique carving designs.
Career Opportunities
Employment or self-employment as a Jade Carver or Stone Artist.
Entry Requirements
Successful completion of the Certificate in Jade and Hard Stone Carving.
Where the applicant has not achieved the Certificate in Jade and Hard Stone Carving, appropriate artistic ability as evidenced by a portfolio submission or a practical demonstration of carving expertise will be required. The portfolio will include previous jade carving, drawing and design.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 6.0.
