Civil Construction

Certificate in Civil Plant Operations (Introductory)

This programme is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the civil construction industry.

Learning takes place in a realistic working environment and includes practical and theory that is based on identified industry needs. 20% of the programme is knowledge-based and 80% is skill-based.

The programme has a strong emphasis on health, safety and environment, and communication.

    Career Opportunities

    Graduates of this programme are basic operators and are suited to entry level employment in the civil construction industry. Employment opportunities may include: quarry work, basic earthmoving, mining, infrastructure, heavy transport (truck driving), surveying, civil engineering or health and safety.

    Entry Requirements

    • Hold a current Full Class 1 Drivers Licence (car), valid for at least 6 months on entry to the programme, or hold a Restricted Class 1 Licence and will gain Full Licence within 2 months of programme commencement.
    • Produce a negative drug test after six weeks on the programme.
    • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.

    Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant has achieved a local or National Certificate in Construction, or another related field and/or has sound written and oral communication skills. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

    Note: Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability.

    Diploma in Applied Road Management

    Graduate engineers who have previously completed a theory based qualification will, after completing the Diploma in Applied Road Management, have the necessary practical skills to be employed as roading network engineers or consultants within the civil construction industry.

    People completing any of the following three certificates or three short awards may not require the Diploma in Applied Road Management but are able to use these qualifications as stepping stones to the full qualification at a later date.

    Certificate in Drilling - Non-Hydrocarbon

    On completing this course, you will have the skills to work as a driller’s assistant on an onshore non-hydrocarbon drilling operation. These skills include mobilisation of equipment and materials, setting up and preparing for drilling and providing support for fellow drillers during the drilling operation. You will have gained a number of driving skills, maintenance of equipment skills and knowledge of health and how to keep yourself safe in the drilling environment.

    Career Opportunities

    There is the opportunity, with further study, to progress from being a driller’s assistant to being a driller and because there is a worldwide shortage of drillers, there is the opportunity of finding employment in a number of locations around the world.


    Further Study Paths

    Once qualified as a driller’s assistant and with further study and experience, you can progress through the industry to eventually become a drilling supervisor.


    Entry Requirements

    • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
    • Produce a negative drug test on the first day of the programme, and at random times during the programme.
    • Hold a full Class 1 Licence for 6 months at programme commencement.
    • High levels of fitness, strength and agility are required to work in this industry, along with unimpaired balance, co-ordination, hearing and eye sight.
    • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5 or above.
