Construction

Certificate in Carpentry (Residential and Commercial)

This programme is designed to prepare students for an apprenticeship or other employment in the construction industry.

Graduates can work through all relevant pre-trade material necessary for successful construction including the understanding of claddings, joinery, masonry, light timber framing, relationships with sub contractors, trade calculations, light commercial and domestic foundations, hand and portable electric tools, safe working practices on construction sites and preliminary works on construction sites.

On successful completion students gain the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate in Carpentry (Residential and Commercial) as well as a number of unit standards towards the National Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4)


Career Opportunities

Graduates of the programme can enter into a career in the construction industry and/or an apprenticeship in carpentry or joinery.

Certificate in Elementary Construction

This programme has been developed to provide students with elementary construction skills and a pathway entry into the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate in Carpentry.

The programme includes a balance of theory and practical work enabling students to gain up to 66 Level 2 Credits.

    This programme will provide comprehensive training for a telehandler operator in a construction environment.

    National Certificates in Scaffolding

    On successful completion of this programme graduates will possess a sound knowledge of scaffolding health and safety legislation and be able safely erect, alter, and dismantle scaffolding relevant to the qualification received.

    Graduates will be able to apply for a Certificate of Competence to erect notifiable scaffolding in accordance with the qualification gained.They will also be qualified to work at heights, set up fall arrest systems, and sling regular loads and communicate during crane operations.


    Career Opportunities

    Qualified scaffolders are sought after for a wide range of work including residential, commercial, industrial, event seating, petrochemical industry both on and offshore, film and theatre sets, and much more.


    Further Study Path

    On completion of Elementary Scaffolding graduates, may enrol infurther levels, Intermediate, Advanced, or Suspended.The Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate and Diploma in Managing Scaffolding Operations is also available.

    National Certificate in Rigging

    The purpose of these programmes is to improve the performance andknowledge of people in the rigging industry and to develop practical skills and a theoretical understanding of rigging within the construction industry.


    Core Elements

    The programme is unique and specifically designed to offer comprehensive and structured training in the following areas:

    • Maintain a range of tools and equipment
    • Understand and apply the Health and Safety in Employment Act

    Short Award in Lifting Loads

    This 22 credit short award has been designed to provide training to people working with cranes as part of their regular work activities.


    Core Elements

    Graduates will receive NZQA Unit Standard 3789 – Sling and Communicate during Crane Operations, and be able to:

    • Identify and control site specific hazards
    • Inspect and evaluate lifting gear
    • Calculate the weights of regular loads
    • Apply lifting equipment to the job
    • Communicate effectively with the crane operator
    • Direct load lifting and load movements

    Working at Heights - Fall Arrest Systems

    The skills to work safely at height are essential, not only for those in the building sector but also for all people who, in the course of their work, are exposed to the potential hazard of falling. This may include factory workers who must access high machinery, tower and silo workers, and others.

    The Tai Poutini Polytechnic Fall Arrest course is for anyone who would be better protected wearing a harness and a fall arrest system while working at height.

    Tai Poutini Polytechnic utilises the latest "safety at height" technology to teach appropriate, safe, and user friendly systems that can be customised to your own particular situation.


    Core Elements

    The fall arrest course provided by Tai Poutini Polytechnic covers the safe use of fall arrest harnesses, knots used in fall arrest systems, rigging and using static lines, the various types of fall arrest equipment available, recovery techniques, and care and maintenance of equipment.

    The course also includes recovery techniques for safe, simple recovery of a suspended worker.

    The course also teaches the safe use of Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 fall arrest systems, along with Height Hazard Awareness and the appropriate Health and Safety in Employment Act regulations.

    The course is NZQA registered and may count towards other qualifications such as the National Certificate in Scaffolding, the National Certificate in Rigging, and others.

    Confined Spaces

    Working in any confined space may be one of the most inherently dangerous activities a person could perform in any employment or contract relationship. The first safety question anyone should ask is "Is there another safer way of completing this work activity? Do we really have to go into this area and work?"

    If the answer to the last part of the above is YES, then we have the course/s for you.

    Courses are based on the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS2865:2001 - Safe working in a confined space.

    Courses could - depending on the length and the requirements of the participants - also cover the requirements of NZQA unit standards.


    Core Elements

    • Unit 18426, Level 3, 4 Credits - Demonstrate knowledge of hazards associated with confined space
    • Unit 17599, Level 4, 5 Credits - Plan a confined space entry
    • Unit 3058, Level 4, 5 Credits - Perform gas tests in an energy and chemical environment
    • Unit 19207, Level 3, 3 Credits - Enter, work in, and exit a confined space in the water industry.
