This course is aimed at people who have never completed or do not have a current First Aid Qualification. Course duration is approx 16 hours. It includes the following NZQA Unit Standards:
Unit 6400: Manage first aid in emergency situations
Unit 6401: Provide first aid until help arrives
Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation Level 2
These units cover both trauma and medical subjects such as fractures, burns, major wounds, internal bleeding, head injuries, environmental conditions, anaphylaxis and spinal injuries, shock and bleeding, soft tissue injuries, poisoning, heart attack, asthma, diabetes, stroke and seizure and obstructed airways and CPR. This unit covers Workplace First Aid as required by Health & Safety regulations.
CPR
This course covers basic CPR and Airway Obstruction. Course duration is approx 3 hours. It includes the following NZQA Unit Standard:
Unit 6402: Provide resuscitation Level 2
Extra subjects can be added to courses to cover your workplace needs.
First Aid Refresher
This course is aimed at people who have held a Current First Aid Certificate for under two years. It covers the almost the same subjects as the Comprehensive First Aid Course in less detail and is intended to refresh a persons understanding and to update any changes that have been made by the New Zealand Resuscitation Council. Course duration is approx 8 hours.

The Level 2 programme has been designed to prepare front-line emergency management personnel for operational service in civil defence emergencies in a range of chosen fields. These include welfare, flood protection, storm response, medical response, transportation, emergency operations centre support, disaster rescue, communications and many others.
The Level 4 programme has been designed to prepare team leaders of front line emergency management personnel who have a supervisory role in a range of chosen fields. These include welfare, flood protection, storm response, disaster rescue, communications, emergency operations centre support, transportation, community coordination and medical response.
The qualification can also provide training in generic management functions including volunteer coordination, training and leadership.

Career Opportunities
The Level 4 Certificate is aimed at frontline emergency management responders who want to pursue a supervisory or managerial role in Civil Defence Emergency Management.
Further Study Paths
Successful completion of certificates will assist students in pursuing their goals to help others and provide students with the confidence in their ability to respond and manage emergency situations.
Students can also continue their study with the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Diploma in Applied Emergency Management (Level 6).

A series of Short Awards and elective standards may be completed as individual courses or may be completed as a stepping stone towards the Certificate in Emergency Medic Care as well as providing more specialised training to suit individual industry workplace needs.

The Diploma in Applied Emergency Management (Level 6) is designed for people seeking to enter the emergency management field or develop their skills and knowledge in this area. “Emergency management is the managerial function charged with creating the framework within which communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters” (International Association of Emergency Managers, 2008).
Graduates are most likely to be employed as an Emergency Management Officer, Coordinator, Advisor or Assistant within a territorial local authority, or in other similar roles such as a business continuity planner for a large company; health emergency management planner for a District Health Board; Programme Coordinator or Officer for a non-governmental organisation or in a management role within one of the primary emergency services. These more varied roles may require additional experience (life or work) in addition to completion of this qualification.
Career Opportunities
Graduates are likely to be employed as an Emergency Management Officer, Coordinator, Advisor or Assistant within a local council or other government department.
Further Study Paths
Upon completion (and achieving satisfactory grades), students have the option to continue to higher education with graduate studies such as those offered by Massey University. The Diploma in Applied Emergency Management introduces students to academic skills such as academic writing, research and referencing so it provides an ideal entry point into academic study in emergency management.

Applicants must have been granted credit for a Coordinated Incident Management
System (CIMS) Level 4 course (unit standard 22445 or 17280), or a course which gives
applicant the opportunity to apply a similar incident control system; and
Applicants must hold at least one of the following:

Certificate in Search and Rescue (Level 4) or higher search and rescue qualification
National Certificate in Ambulance (Level 4) or higher qualification
National Certificate in Fire & Rescue (any sector) (Level 4) or higher qualification
New Zealand Police Training Services Certificate in Core Policing (or former version)

Graduates of this programme will have the range of competencies and skills at all levels of the sector including, search, rescue, management, related technologies, leadership and training.
In broad terms a student who has completed the qualification will beable to, communicate effectively in a search and rescue environment, maintain personal safety in the outdoors, describe and work within the command structure of New Zealand Search and Rescue in a variety of roles, demonstrate specific search and rescue related competencies in leadership, management and support activities, apply search and rescue theory in the field, monitor and improve their own search and practice.

National Certificates in Fire and Rescue (Vegetation)
The National Certificate(s) in Fire and Rescue Vegetation Level 2-6 are designed for people working in or intending to work in vegetation fire prevention and fire fighting either in paid employment or as a volunteer. The course covers subjects such as fire behaviour, incident management, compliance, communication, command, and control of fire fighting as well as management of a rural fire organisation.
Career Opportunities
Provides a pathway from basic fire fighter to people intending to work in senior positions in fire management either in paid employment or as a volunteer.
