Tai Poutini Polytechnic is accredited to provide unit standard training in all aspects of the Extractive industry up to Level 6.
We provide training that leads to a number of Extractive Industry National Certificates, including the unit standards to enable you to get Certificates of Competency.

Trainees are also trained in how to comply with the provisions of various OSH Acts. The training is designed for those who work in an extractive industry field.

National Certificate in Extractive Industries- Explosives
This programme covers the safe use of explosives for land based tasks including:
Stump, boulder and hung up tree removal
Dams and drains plus cut culvert creation
Product knowledge
Rules and regulations, correct storage and recording of products.
For those who meet all criteria they are then able to apply for an Approved Handlers Certificate.
A holder of the qualification is able to demonstrate skills in storing explosives, designing blasting layouts, and carrying out blasting operations for land work.
On completion of this course students will gain the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Land Operations Using Explosives) (Level 3).
Career Opportunities
Graduates could include farmers, horticulturists, firewood contractors, earthmoving contractors, agricultural contractors. Mining workers may do this as an entry point into the Level 4 Certificate.

Entry Requirements
Be18 years of age or over.
Applicants must pass a “fit and proper person” NZ Police check.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.
Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.
Please note that applicants may be asked to undertake a New Zealand Police Check to ascertain their suitability to the programme.
Note: Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability.
