Mining and Extractive Industries

Certificate in Extractive Industries

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is accredited to provide unit standard training in all aspects of the Extractive industry up to Level 6.

We provide training that leads to a number of Extractive Industry National Certificates, including the unit standards to enable you to get Certificates of Competency.


Core Elements

Our training covers in Underground Mining:

  • 1st Class Mine Manager (Metalifferous)
  • A & B Grade Tunnel Manager
  • Gas Tester
  • Coal Mine Deputy
  • Coal Mine Underviewer
  • 1st Class Mine Manager
  • Winding Engine Driver

Our training covers in Surface Extraction:

  • A & B Grade Quarry Manager
  • A & B Grade Opencast Coal Mine Manager
Trainees are also trained in how to comply with the provisions of various OSH Acts. The training is designed for those who work in an extractive industry field.

Tai Poutini specialise in delivering and managing training to the Extractive Industry and for all mining companies.

National Certificate in Extractive Industries- Explosives

This programme covers the safe use of explosives for land based tasks including:
  • Stump, boulder and hung up tree removal
  • Dams and drains plus cut culvert creation
  • Product knowledge
  • Rules and regulations, correct storage and recording of products.

For those who meet all criteria they are then able to apply for an Approved Handlers Certificate.

A holder of the qualification is able to demonstrate skills in storing explosives, designing blasting layouts, and carrying out blasting operations for land work.

On completion of this course students will gain the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Land Operations Using Explosives) (Level 3).


Career Opportunities

Graduates could include farmers, horticulturists, firewood contractors, earthmoving contractors, agricultural contractors. Mining workers may do this as an entry point into the Level 4 Certificate.

  • Certificate in Civil, Quarrying and Mining (Introductory)

Entry Requirements

  • Be18 years of age or over.
  • Applicants must pass a “fit and proper person” NZ Police check.
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.

Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

Please note that applicants may be asked to undertake a New Zealand Police Check to ascertain their suitability to the programme.

Note: Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability.

Explosives - Snow Blasting

Tai Poutini Polytechnic is also accredited to provide unit standards in the specific area of snowblasting. This training occurs on site - in the mountains.

  • Unit 8890, Level 4, 10 Credits - Store explosives for use in extractive industries
  • Unit 17694, Level 2, 2 Credits - Demonstrate knowledge of explosives and their properties
  • Unit 17699, Level 4, 20 Credits - Plan layouts, assemble, place and fire shots for snow control
  • Unit 4562, Level 4, 2 Credits - Assist with avalanche control using hand charges
  • Unit 4563, Level 5, 4 Credits - Control avalanches using hand charges
  • Unit 4564, Level 5, 6 Credits - Control avalanches using avalaunchers
  • Unit 4565, Level 5, 6 Credits - Control avalanches using helibombing
