Certificate in Civil Plant Operations (Introductory)
This programme is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the civil construction industry.
Learning takes place in a realistic working environment and includes practical and theory that is based on identified industry needs. 20% of the programme is knowledge-based and 80% is skill-based.
The programme has a strong emphasis on health, safety and environment, and communication.
Graduates of this programme are basic operators and are suited to entry level employment in the civil construction industry. Employment opportunities may include: quarry work, basic earthmoving, mining, infrastructure, heavy transport (truck driving), surveying, civil engineering or health and safety.

Entry Requirements
Hold a current Full Class 1 Drivers Licence (car), valid for at least 6 months on entry to the programme, or hold a Restricted Class 1 Licence and will gain Full Licence within 2 months of programme commencement.
Produce a negative drug test after six weeks on the programme.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.
Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant has achieved a local or National Certificate in Construction, or another related field and/or has sound written and oral communication skills. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.

Certificate in Introductory Mining Skills (Surface Extraction)
This programme will provide students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the surface mining industry. Mining operations are varied and include opencast coal, gold, aggregate and quarry operations.
The programme has been designed by extractive industriesrepresentatives to ensure the best possible skills are delivered to a new entrant in the mining industry. Due to an increase in mining operations there is a significant shortage of trained workers making this an awesome career choice.
Career opportunities clearly exist in the burgeoning mining industry but may also include quarrying, tunneling, civil construction and roading.
Further Study paths
On gaining employment in the mining industry the opportunity then exists for students to enter into a training agreement with EXITO (Extractive Industries Training Organisation) to work towards gaining further qualifications. Most companies are very proactive in terms of further training. The Tai Poutini Polytechnic Land Based Blasting course is also a further study option.

Applicants must have an appropriate level of communication skills and be able to satisfy one of the following: achieved NCEA Level One (or equivalent) or can demonstrate written and oral communication skills, or has achieved a local or a National Certificate in Construction, or another related field.
Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.
