Certificate in Automotive and Engineering Trades

This programme is designed to prepare you for an apprenticeship in the Automotive and Engineering industry. Upon successful completion you will receive the Tai Poutini Polytechnic Certificate in Automotive and Engineering Trades including the National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills) (level 2) and the National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (level 2).


Core Elements

A graduate of the programme will be able to perform tasks on their own and under supervision. Topics are broken into unit standards for ease of study and these include:

  • Engine rebuilding
  • Hand tools and workshop equipment
  • Fusion gas, mig, tig and arc welding
  • Servicing and testing automotive batteries
  • Automotive ignition systems
  • Manual transmission and clutches
  • Understanding engineering materials
  • Draw and interpret engineering sketches
  • Shift loads
  • Measure with complex devices in engineering
  • Automotive electrical

Entry Requirements

  • Some courses within this programme require specific levels of physical ability.
  • Successfully achieved NCEA Level One (or equivalent).
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must meet IELTS (or equivalent) Level 5.5.

Selection Criteria apply. Special Entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme. Adult students with equivalent life skills are encouraged to apply. Please contact the Polytechnic for details.
